The life of St Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint, is celebrated this week with cultural and academic events, ecumenical worship and a walk in his footsteps.

The annual St Mungo Festival, organised by Mediaeval Glasgow Trust, Glasgow Churches Together and Glasgow Life, is now in its 15th year. Held around the saint’s Feast Day on January 13, it celebrates the life of the saint and raises awareness of the city’s history through free events and exhibitions.

This year’s festival began yesterday (Monday) with a lecture on Mediaeval Burgh Life. Events continue on Wednesday with An Island That Yearns for Saints, a performance of music in honour of Saints Mungo, Ninian and Brigid by Strathclyde University Chamber Choir.

On Thursday Professor Elaine Moohan will give a talk on music at Glasgow Cathedral to 1620, and on Friday Vespers for the Feast of St Mungo will be held at St Andrew’s RC Cathedral, with the St Mungo Singers.

On Saturday there is an opportunity to walk some of the route St Mungo would have taken along the Molendinar Burn from Provanmill to Glasgow; and at the Mitchel Library there is a chance to see a copy of the Vita Kentigerni, the 12th century life of St Kentigern written by Jocelyn of Furness. There is also an online event considering the signs and symbols of Glasgow’s governing bodies in the Cathedral.

The festival closes with an ecumenical service in the Cathedral on Sunday, January 14.

More details of all the events are available on the Festival website.
