'Study and Sing' Day

Wednesday April 10 2024

A ‘study and sing’ day at St Andrews University next month will focus on the Canticles.

The canticles are scriptural hymns that appear in the Bible, such as the Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis and Benedicite.

Led by staff from the university’s Sacred Music programme and run in association with the Royal School of Church Music, the event on May 11 will explore some of the texts using a range of musical settings - from 16th century to 21st century Scotland by way of 18th/19th century Appalachia and early 20th century England, and also including some choral speaking with soundscape recordings.

Sessions will take place in the Laidlaw Music Centre on Queen’s Terrace, and adult singers of all levels of experience are welcome. The day will close with an act of worship using the material, in St Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

The cost will be £12, payable on the day. To register interest in advance, contact Dr Jane Pettegree on jkp1@st-andrews.ac.uk
