Sculptor to be Book Sale Patron

Wednesday March 19 2014

Scottish sculptor Alexander Stoddart has accepted an invitation to be patron of this year’s Christian Aid book sale at St Andrews and St Georges West Church, Edinburgh.

The Sculptor in Ordinary to the Queen in Scotland, whose statue of physicist James Clerk Maxwell stands outside the George Street church, succeeds former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, in the role.

Mary Davidson, convener of the book sale, said: “This is extraordinarily appropriate, for, as sculptor of such works as statues of David Hume, Adam Smith and James Clerk Maxwell, Alexander Stoddart can be said to represent not only modern Scottish art, but also history, society, literature – indeed all learning.”

The book sale, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, is the largest single volunteer-led fundraising event for Christian Aid in the UK. Over £1 million has been raised altogether, and after last year’s event a cheque for £90,000 was handed over.

The sale takes place from Saturday May 10 – Friday May 16 (except Sunday). Donations of books, art, music, antiques, toys, stamps and postcards will be accepted at the church from Monday April 28.
