'Forgotten' Psalm Settings Online

The relaunched website of the Church Service Society offers a new resource for the worship of the Church: the psalm settings, canticles and motets from the Wode (pronounced Wood) Psalter composed in the years following the Scottish Reformation.

These were originally published in single part books. This is the first time that the complete music of the whole collection has been brought together.

The resource is the result of a research project on the part of Edinburgh University, when the psalms were presented in the context of an exhibition which related them to their times. To encourage their use, the music scores are free to download. You can also hear them: selected psalms are provided with MP3 sound files.

The Society has also made available its entire range of journals, published coninuously from 1928. There is no other comparable record of how Scotland has worshipped, not just in the reporting of developments over a century but through study and research of books and documents back to the Scottish Reformation and beyond.

The Society was founded in 1865 for the improvement of Scottish worship and will mark its 150th anniversary in 2015.

“Great to be able to hear such early music. ”
