Church's Young People to Help Remember WW1

Monday April 28

A rural church is to make a major contribution to the understanding and commemoration of the First World War in its village.

This summer marks the centenary of the start of the war. Fenwick Parish Church's 'Lest We Forget' project will include the production of a short film on the effects of the conflict on the area, near Kilmarnock; the creation of an exhibition and booklet, and art and drama workshops.

It will be led by people aged 12-21, with the assistance of East Ayrshire Leisure's Heritage team. The project has been created with the help of a 'substantial' grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Susan Wadsworth, youth leader at the church said: “We are thrilled and so excited to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund as this will make such a difference to our plans to commemorate such an important anniversary in Fenwick.”

Ross McGregor, East Ayrshire Leisure’s Cultural Development Officer (Heritage), said: “This is an exciting heritage project for young people, and we’re delighted to be involved. We’re very keen for our heritage collections and resources to be used by as many people as possible. This project is a wonderful example of how to get young people actively involved in exploring and recording local heritage.”
