"A Tremendous Honour"

Thursday May 8 2014

Scottish sculptor Alexander Stoddart has said it was 'a tremendous honour' to be invited to be patron of the 2014 Christian Aid sale at St Andrew's and St George's West Church, Edinburgh.

Mr Stoddart, Queen's Sculptor in Ordinary in Scotland, addressed volunteers at the church as they completed setting up for the sale, which opens on Saturday.

He said: "Christianity is so fundamentally involved in helping and volunteering. It's a kind of moral enlightenment - doing unto others as you would have done unto yourself.

"What we are trying to do here is raise lots of money to help people who are in a terrible fix."

The Minister of St Andrew's and St George's West, the Rev Ian Gilmour, had joked that it was a 'monumental pleasure' to have Mr Stoddart, whose works include the sculpture of James Clerk Maxwell outside the church.

Mr Gillmour said he was optimistic that the sale would raise over £100,000 this year, having made £96,000 in 2013, and paid tribute to the 'energy and commitment of so many people' who make the sale happen.

The book sale opens on Saturday May 10, and then Monday May 12 - Friday May 16.
