Memorials Rededicated at Churchman's Birthplace

OVER 100 people joined a host of special guests at a service to mark the refurbishment of memorials to the founder of Life and Work, the Church of Scotland Guild and the Diaconate in the village of Wamphray in Dumfriesshire.

The memorial to the Very Rev Professor Archibald Charteris and his wife Catherine, a leading figure in the early Guild movement, and to the Charteris family, were restored as part of the Guild's centenary celebrations.

The service, which took place at Wamphray Parish Church on Sunday, was led by parish minister, the Rev Adam Dillon addressed by Guild National Convener, Marjorie Paton and Mr John Charteris, a descendant of the distinguished churchman.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood, led prayers and a reflection at the service.

It was a wonderful service with an excellent Reflection from our Moderator and introduction from Marjorie Paton plus interesting reminiscence about his distinguished ancestor from Lt. Col. John Charteris whose resemblance to Archibald Charteris is uncanny! A greeting from the Editor of Life & Work and prayers by Morag Crawford, representing the Diaconate, wove together some of the other major strands of Charteris' contribution to the life of the Church. What a visionary he was and it is inspiring to read the late Arthur Gordon's memoir about him from which, sometimes, I feel that we could learn much that would be appropriate to-day.

The local minister, the Rev Adam Dillon , and his team, are to be congratulated on having brought about this celebration and given the Guild a day to remember indeed!
