Resourcing 'The Golden Age'

                                                                                                                                           Wednesday May 27 2014

A RESOURCE pack offering new ways of thinking about and working with older generations in church has been launched by the Church of Scotland Guild.

Research into the place of older people in the Church was launched in 2012 as the Golden Age Project as part of the Guild's 125th anniversary celebrations. The Guild worked with Professor John Swinton from Aberdeen University, Maureen O'Neill from the charity, Faith in Older People and researcher Dr Harriet Mowat, from Mowat Research.

Thirteen congregations were involved in the research and a research pack, which includes a book and DVD was launched last week.

Iain Whyte, General Secretary of the Church of Scotland Guild explained: "It was recognised that people do face physical and health-related challenges as they get older. They do start to ask different questions about life and the end of life. They experience the Church in different ways as styles of worship change, as their own circumstances evolve.

"But alongside the broadly negative things that we too often associate with age, there are many positives. People may have more time to give to the Church. They have huge wells of skill and experience. They often have more resilience and flexibility in terms of how things are done or could be done."

Copies of the pack have been distributed to every Guild and further information and packs are available by emailing guild@cofscotland.org.uk

A full report on the project will appear in the July issue of Life and Work.
