19th Century Essays Raise Funds for Crathie Charity

                                                                                                                                                 Thursday, June 12 2014

A COLLECTION of essays written by a 19th century farmer is raising funds for a charity based at Crathie Church in Aberdeenshire.

The reflections of Thomas Mitchell, which were deeply influenced by his life in the Church of Scotland, were discovered by his granddaughter Sheila Harrison.

She read the essays and, believing they were worthy of a wider audience, sent them off to a publisher and was delighted when Glasgow-based Vagabond Voices, said they would be happy to publish the book.

All royalties from sales of the book, Essays on Life, which costs £8.95, will be donated to Crathie Opportunity Holidays. The charity was established after fundraising by local volunteers led to the conversion of the manse courtyard within Crathie Kirk to create four self-catering cottages, including high quality access accommodation for the disabled.

The charity has royal approval, with HRH the Duchess of Rothesay serving as its patron.

Mrs Harrison said: “I believe my grandfather would have been delighted that his work was helping to raise funds to support such a worthwhile charity, drawing visitors to the area. “
