Minister Walks the Bounds

Tuesday June 17 2014

The minister of one of the largest and most mountainous parishes in Scotland said he ‘thoroughly enjoyed the experience’ after completing a walk of the parish boundary.

The Rev Ken MacKenzie, minister of Braemar and Crathie, and Richard Gledson, Resident Factor at Balmoral Estate, set off on June 8 on the six-day walk. The route covered more than 100 miles and climbed in excess of 9,000m, including the second and third highest peaks in Scotland and 17 Munros in total.

For Ken, the walk was a long held ambition, and for Richard, who is chairman of The River Dee Trust, it was a chance to walk round the upper catchment of the River.

Ken said: “It was pretty demanding, I think it’s a young person’s business really, but it was a terrific thing to do.

“It follows I suppose a bit of a tradition, there are some parishes where on Rogation Sunday folk used to walk round the boundaries of parish and think about themselves and their neighbours, and I found it very worthwhile from that point of view.

“But also just to get an idea of the scale of this parish: it’s really quite grand and not many people live here.”

Ken and Richard were raising money for two charities, The River Dee Trust and the TK2 Project, which supports underprivileged children in south west Romania and is administered by Blythswood Care.

“Congratulations on achieving your walk for your charities. ”

“What a great experience - congratulations. I wonder if other ministers will now look at their parish boundaries and set-up charitable walks alongside church members & interested locals. What a great opportunity (filled with potential) that would be!”
