Games Exhibition Opens

Thursday June 26 2014

An exhibition of artworks created by children to welcome all visitors and competitors to Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games opened this week.

Global Minorities Alliance (GMA), which fights for the rights of minority communities the world over, held a multicultural art workshop at Wellington Church earlier this month to create the works.

GMA invited children from all over Glasgow and from all different communities to the church, where the crypt was temporarily turned into an artist's studio for the day. The children (aged 3-11) were provided with blank canvasses, brightly coloured paints, and 'Welcome' and/or 'Commonwealth' as their themes.

Rebecca Gebauer, co-ordinator of the workshop, said: “It was a sheer privilege to be able to work with children as their passion for the Commonwealth spirit is really admirable. The artworks the children produced are full of happiness, and we hope that lots of people visit the exhibition to enjoy the beauty, imagination and the 'welcome' message to everyone during the Commonwealth Games.”

The Global Minorities Alliance 'Welcome' Exhibition is on display at Glasgow University Memorial Chapel, Chapel Corridor (South), West Quadrangle, Main Building Gilmorehill Campus, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ, throughout the Commonwealth Games. It is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12noon on Saturdays.
