The former minister of St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, the Very Rev Dr Gilleasbuig Macmillan, was invested with the Insignia of a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) by the Queen last week.
Dr Macmillan, who retired after forty years at St Giles last September, was received by the Queen at Holyrood Palace where he returned his badge of office as Dean of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.
Taking over from him as Dean is the Very Reverend Professor Iain Torrance, who said: “I was truly delighted and was happy to be the first of Gilleasbuig’s colleagues to congratulate him. I know that many friends and admirers and people all across Scotland and beyond will take great pleasure in such a recognition of his many outstanding years of service. It is truly good to see Gilleasbuig so honoured.”
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev John Chalmers, himself a Queen's Chaplain in Scotland, said: “The members of the Chapel Royal in Scotland are delighted to learn of Her Majesty’s appointment of the Very Reverend Professor Iain Torrance as Dean of the Order of the Thistle. We know that Iain will feel greatly honoured and will be most diligent in his duties.”
