Presbytery Praise for Moderator in Referendum Role

                                                                                                                                   Wednesday October 8, 2014

THE Presbytery of Jedburgh has formally commended the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for his ‘leading role’ in the Referendum on Independence.

The Presbytery, which met earlier this month, also praised the Moderator, the Rt Rev John Chalmers for conducting a national Service of Reconcilation at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, in the wake of the Referendum, which resulted in a ‘no’ vote from the Scottish electorate.

The Rev Michael Scouler, Convener of the Presbytery’s Church and Nation Committee, said: “ Of the service at St Giles' in particular I thought it rather wonderful to see our Church both as the national Church it believes itself to be, and at the same time, in an entirely positive light. I couldn't help but wonder when, indeed if, such a combination might ever occur again.”

Praising the Moderator, the Presbytery noted its "warmest appreciation" for the role played by Mr Chalmers as “an ambassador for Christian reconciliation both in the run-up to and the aftermath of the Referendum on Scottish independence” and thanked him for his conduct and service to both his denomination and the people of Scotland.
