Parish News Round-up

Thursday October 9

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

The Scots Kirk in Paris had a joyful celebration on September 28 when 5 new elders joined the Kirk Session.

Gerald Chiunda, Alisdair Gould and Alison Tardivel were ordained and admitted, whilst  Margaret Cowie and Valerie Prieur were also admitted to the Kirk Session having previously been ordained elsewhere. The service was followed by a church barbecue where the new elders were welcomed by the congregation.

This brings the number of serving elders in Paris to 8 plus 3 living abroad, including the webmaster who keeps the website up to date from Kenya.

The photographs shows the new elders with minister, the Rev Jim Cowie.

The Knitter’s Group at Corstorphine St Ninian’s Church in Edinburgh are nearing completion of a project to knit blankets for each resident at a neighbouring care home.

Ninian’s Nitters was formed following the Guild’s work for the Fish and Chip Baby Appeal. They committed to nearly 60 blankets for Drumbrae House.

As each blanket consists of 50 squares, this meant the ladies had 3000 squares to knit altogether. 50 blankets (2500 squares) have now been completed and the group hopes to finish in time for Guild Week next month.

Marty MacBean opened 4B Inverness (Cauldeen) Girls’ Brigade Company in October 1964.  It first met in Green Drive Hall and then moved to Cauldeen Primary School when it opened in 1968.

Over the years Marty has seen well over a thousand girls pass through the company and the mothers of many of the current girls were once members of the company themselves.

The current members were joined by former members and leaders and supporters of the company to celebrate this wonderful milestone at Ness Bank Church Hall on Saturday 4 October.  The hall was decorated with a banner made by the girls and there was also a photo display.

The event was attended by Margaret Cooper MBE, National Vice President of Girls’ Brigade Scotland who presented Marty with a commemorative certificate.

The current girls performed some songs and the audience joined in with a game and a dance specially devised to mark the occasion.

Throughout June, July and August Monifieth Parish Church, near Dundee, held a very successful Bake and Book stall in the High Street Halls in Monifieth. The items sold ranged from large furniture to small bric-a-brac, with the baking side made up of an expansive selection of home baked items, baked by members.

The grand sum of £15,015 was raised for the church.
