Charity launch to relieve pain in Malawi

Friday October 31 2014

Christian charity EMMS International has launched an appeal to help children with cancer in Malawi, with all donations matched by the UK government.

The Sunday's Child Appeal is raising funds for a landmark palliative care project in Malawi. The UK government will match public donations, pound for pound, until the end of January.

The appeal launched today with a celebratory cycle to Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, the birthplace of David Livingstone. Many participants will also be heading to Malawi next summer cycling 400km to raise funds as part of the appeal.

James Wells, Chief Executive of EMMS International says:

“We are thrilled at this amazing opportunity for the UK public to help improve palliative care in Malawi, supported by the UK government.”

“Children with cancer in Malawi are in pain, and their families are helpless, because of the lack of pain relief and specialist care. This will help bring an end to this unnecessary suffering.”

“Match funding means donations will go even further to provide much needed care and pain relief to people in need.”

Funds raised will provide degree-level training for palliative care specialists, and raise the standards at three hospitals to become centres for excellence in palliative care. The number of people receiving the care they deserve will increase by 5,300 each year as a result.

EMMS International is a Christian international healthcare charity which works in Malawi, India, Nepal and the UK to save lives, reduce suffering and promote compassionate healthcare. The organisation in Edinburgh, founded in 1841, counts David Livingstone amongst its earliest members.
