Parish News Round-up

Thursday November 6 2014

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

A Bearsden church's community café has proved so successful that it has doubled its opening times.

Killermont Parish Church developed the café in response to a survey carried out by its Responsive Church Team. This found an above-average number of older people, people who live alone and carers in the parish. It was decided that a café would be an ideal place for them to meet and relax.

Advised and supplied by catering equipment supplier New Concept, they initially opened for one day a week last April, but last month increased that to two days plus one Saturday a month.

Convener of the church's Mission Group, Ian Steven, said: "The intention was not for the café to make money, but to provide a service and it looks like we will generate a surplus and we can use that in various ways. The first is to contribute to the church for letting us use the space. Money will also be reserved to upgrade, repair or replace items in the café over time when it is needed, rather than fundraising each time before we can do it. The surplus from this will then be used in mission projects. We can put the money back into the community, and other communities less well off than ourselves."

After 64 years as an Elder of Carnbee Parish Church, Fife, senior elder Jack Rodger has decided it is time to retire from elder duties.

On Sunday October 27 the Church held a lunch in Arncroach Church Hall for Jack in their appreciation for his loyalty, hard work and total commitment over the years.

A framed picture of Carnbee Church, which was painted by Pittenweem artist Margaret Smith, was presented to Jack and his wife Alice by the Rev Margaret Rose and the Session Clerk Henry Watson.

A Perthshire parish church has become the first major corporate member of a local credit union. Full story here.
