BB War Memorial Rededicated

Monday November 10 2014

After two years of planning, fundraising and work, Leith St Andrew's Church in Edinburgh was able to rededicate a refurbished War Memorial which sits in its grounds on Remembrance Sunday.

The 3rd Leith Boys' Brigade War Memorial Lamp (right) has been fully restored and repainted in Brigade colours.

The lamp was installed in 1925 to commemorate 36 former members of the 3rd Leith Company who lost their lives in the First World War. Another roll of honour was later added for a further 12 who died in World War 2.

In recent years it had fallen into disrepair, and the lamp head had to be removed to prevent further damage.

The total cost of refurbishment was around £9000, of which £6,672 came from the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund of the War Memorials Trust.

The Memorial Base was completed and returned to the site by April this year, and in September the lanternhead was reattached and the lamp switched on for the first time in many years.

During the work the church carried out research on the men commemorated on the memorial, and produced a memorial booklet. A reunion of the 3rd Leith Company was also held.
