Appeal Funds for CrossReach Service

Tuesday January 6 2014

CrossReach, the Church of Scotland’s Social Care Arm, has said it is ‘delighted’ that one of its projects has been awarded £2000 by the STV Appeal.

The money will go to the Perth Prison Visitors Support and Advice Centre, which helps the families of people in the prison.

The STV Appeal helps fund projects aimed at making a difference in the lives of children and young people living in poverty in Scotland.

Viv Dickenson, CrossReach’s Director of Children and Family Services, said: “We are delighted to receive a grant from the STV Appeal.

“Children with a parent in prison can experience multiple disadvantages and this grant will allow our children’s worker to identify children experiencing the effects of poverty to be directly supported to meet some of their immediate needs including healthy food parcels, toothbrushes and toys or educational items.

“The children’s worker is also developing a resource for families affected by poverty which will help them to access appropriate support in their local communities.”

CrossReach also announced yesterday that its Daisy Chain Early Years Project in Govanhill, Glasgow, is to continue receiving funding from the Third Sector Early Intervention Fund.

The Fund launched in 2012 and was originally intended to operate to this year, but has been extended to March 2016.

Mrs Dickinson said: “The project offers a range of supports to hundreds of families with young children in the Govanhill Community including play, parenting, literacy and healthy living. The staff and volunteers work alongside other faith and community groups to alleviate the impacts of poverty in the area and to help families from a diverse range of backgrounds to connect with each other and feel less isolated.

“The funding will also allow us to build on the positive relationships established with Roma families in the area and to better understand their particular challenges so that we can help them work together on solutions.”
