Oldest Member of the Kirk?

Jessie Gallan is pictured with her minister, the Rev Markus Auffermann of Woodside Parish Church, Aberdeen, who visited to celebrate her 109th birthday.

Jessie, who turned 109 on January 2, is the oldest person in Scotland and presumed to be the oldest member of the Church of Scotland. She puts her longevity down to 'faith in God, walking and lots of porridge'.

She was born in 1906 on a farm near Kintore, Aberdeenshire, and worked as a housemaid and at the Lauriston Hotel in Ballater. She celebrated her birthday with cake at Crosby House care home, where she now lives.

“Congratulations, Jessie - you look great! What changes you must have seen in your lifetime. Maybe not all for the better, but certainly not all for the worse. Wish I could visit to chat with you.
There's a member of our little Bridge Club who will celebrate her 100th on March 17th - can't wait to tell her about you,
lang may your lum reek, and God bless,

Elizabeth.”
