Event to Promote Gaelic Language and Worship

Thursday February 5

The Moderator-Designate of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is calling for the Church to embrace imaginative new initiatives to promote the use of Gaelic.

The Rev Dr Angus Morrison (right) will speak at a conference to encourage the use of the Gaelic language in the Church which will take place in Glasgow next month. He is urging those with an interest in promoting the Gaelic language within the Church to register for the event.

Dr Morrison is a Gaelic speaker, one of the Church’s champions of the language and a member of the Church’s Gaelic Group. He will take up the position of Moderator at the General Assembly in May.

Other speakers who have been confirmed include Margaret Mary Murray, who is Head of Service at BBC Alba, and the Rev John Urquhart, who has been developing contemporary and traditional Gaelic worship materials in partnership with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Skye.

Dr Morrison hopes the one day conference at St George’s Tron church in Glasgow on March 21 will inspire ‘new and imaginative thought ‘ about the use of Gaelic within the Church.

He said: "Within the Church of Scotland, we have sought for quite some time to encourage the use of the Gaelic language in worship and other contexts in the Church.

"In recent years, for various reasons, rather less has been attempted in this important area. As a Church, however, we believe the time is now opportune to encourage new initiatives in promoting the use of Gaelic both in the context of traditional worship services and in imaginative ways that take account of the developing needs of the Gaelic-speaking and Gaelic-learning community in Scotland."

“I trust and pray [the conference] will be significant event and a major catalyst in promoting the use of the Gaelic language as an immensely rich part of our national, cultural and church inheritance. We are inviting anyone with an interest in promoting the Gaelic language in the Church to register their attendance at this event.”

The conference will be held on Saturday March 21, in Glasgow: St George's Tron Church, in Buchanan Street, from 10am to 4pm. Anyone interested in attending should email gaelic@churchofscotland.org.uk
