Church Launches Lent Reflections with Christian Aid

Wednesday February 18

The Church of Scotland has teamed up with Christian Aid for a series of short Lenten reflections, starting today.

Each day during Lent the Church of Scotland website will include a short reflection, along with links to relevant features by Christian Aid and the organisation’s Count Your Blessings smartphone app.

Introducing the series today, the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt Rev John Chalmers, says: “We are giving people an opportunity to experience their Lenten journey at different levels and, in this way, we hope to open eyes and minds and hearts to the complexity and the urgency of building the Kingdom in both spiritual and practical ways.

“As Moderator I have provided the first reflection for Ash Wednesday and other friends have provided other thoughts that will help us to Count our Blessings throughout Lent. At the weekends we have access to the material which Christian Aid itself has written for Lent; this also contains resources that may be used in worship. It is my hope and prayer that the across the Church we will be sharing some common themes as we make our way to the Cross and then to the Easter Garden.

“Then as we celebrate the resurrection and the promise of life after death, we will be able to pray and work so that the poorest of the world's poor might also have the opportunity to enjoy life before death.”

In the first reflection today, the Moderator focuses on water, reflecting on his recent trip to Nigeria and South Sudan.

Other Lent reflections available

Sanctuary First is a daily worship resource produced by Sanctus Media, a not-for-profit company that operates out of St Andrew’s Bo’ness Church of Scotland. They have launched a 40-day ‘Lent Challenge’, which begins today with a look at Philippians 4: 1-7 and a challenge to tell a friend.

International development charity Tearfund have a ’40 Days, 40 Prayers’ Lent appeal, which today focuses on Psalm 147:3: ‘He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds’.

Mission Aviation Fellowship's Lent campaign is called 'We Won't Give Up', and includes weekly devotional emails.
