Churches housing in tenancy rights call

Scottish Churches Housing Action (SCHA) is one of a coalition of organisations calling on the Scottish Government to drop plans to introduce probationary tenancies for all new social sector tenants.

Graham Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, has written on behalf of 12 organisations, including SCHA, to the Minister for Housing and Welfare, Margaret Burgess MSP.

The letter calls on the Minister to reconsider plans to introduce the new-style tenancies, which would reduce the rights of new tenants for the first year, by making it easier for landlords - councils and housing associations - to repossess.

Mr Brown writes: "It is unclear what the evidence is of the need for reform, what problem it seeks to address or whether this measure would be effective in practice."

SCHA's Chief Executive Alastair Cameron adds: "This measure creates a presumption that new social sector tenants are anti-social, so landlords need measures to end the tenancy speedily.  We recognise anti-social tenants create huge problems for neighbours and the community.  However, it's wrong to treat everyone with suspicion."

SCHA represents 13 denominations, including the Church of Scotland.
