Parish News Round-up

Thursday March 5

Our weekly round-up of news received from churches.

More than two decades of commitment to fairtrade were recognised this week when Inverleith St Serf’s Church was awarded two Lord Provost of Edinburgh Fair Trade awards.

The church, and its fairtrade stall Goldenacre, was awarded the Fair Trade Achievement Award and the Fair Trade Faith Community Award.

Graham Mackenzie, who with his family has been the driving force behind Inverleith St Serfs’ fairtrade campaign and Session Clerk Helen Hannan were at the award ceremony on Monday.

Their minister, the Rev Joanne Foster, said: “It’s quite a coup, especially the Faith Community Award because that was open to all faith groups in Edinburgh. We hadn’t anticipated anything so it came as a surprise.”

There has been a fairtrade stall in Inverleith St Serf’s (and, before they united in 2011, in Inverleith and St Serf’s Churches) for over 20 years. Fairtrade sales in the church have more than doubled over five years – to over £7000 in 2014, and profits have been used to benefit the local community.

For 18 months the congregation has donated food and funds to the community project Tenants and Residents in Muirhouse (TRIM).

An evening to celebrate the service of Marvyn MacKay as Session Clerk at Stepps Parish Church was held in February 2015. Mr MacKay stepped down from the role after almost 18 years in office. During that time he has served with three ministers and dealt with two periods of vacancy, one of them extended. The congregation expressed their thanks for his dedication to his duties by presenting Mr MacKay with an Iona cross. He is pictured here with his wife, Sandra.
