Parish News Round-up

Thursday March 19

Our weekly round-up of news submitted by churches.

A team from the Parish of Newbattle in Midlothian including the parish minister and church treasurer, completed The Mighty Deerstalker – a fiendish 9.8 mile run over steep hills with lots of water and mud thrown in and all in the dark! In the process they raised more than £1500 towards The Cornerstone Project – for the redevelopment of Mayfield and Easthouses Church to include a soft play facility, a community café and training kitchen and flexible accommodation.

The team consisted of the Rev Sean Swindells, Tracy Teasdale, Maxine Teasdale and Nial Stewart.

Sean's next challenge is The Edinburgh Marathon which takes place on Sunday 31st May. Sean will be completing the full distances of 26.2 miles and would welcome any support along the route!

On the evening of Saturday March 7 Alva Church hosted the second annual quiz organised by its Men’s Group for churches in Clackmannanshire.

Answering to quizmaster George Sherry were 17 teams representing Baptist and Roman Catholic churches and the Church of Scotland.

After a hard fought contest a team from Menstrie Church of Scotland, “Martin’s Muppets”, won the day. A prize for the best named team went to “50 Shades of Grey Hair” - and the booby prize of whoopy cushions and dark glasses to hide their embarrassment went to a team from Alva, “50 Shades of Awesome”.

Although the night was designed to be an evening of laughter and fellowship, it managed to raise £400 for the charity of choice of the winning team, The British Heart Foundation.

The Sunday School in the Parish of Knockando, Elchies and Archiestown, in Moray, joined in the preparation for the World Day of Prayer on March 6 by presenting to the congregation their view of the theme. The materials for the day this year were prepared in the Bahamas, and the children built shoebox models depicting life in the islands and offered prayers that reflected on life in the islands.

At New Abbey Church, near Dumfries on March 8 Ian Shuttleworth and Ian Kingan were presented with long service certificates by the minister, the Rev Maureen Duncan, to mark 50 years as elders. They were both ordained  on February 28 1965. It was a day to remember in more ways for Ian Shuttleworth because also on that day in 1965 his eldest daughter was born.

During 50 years of service both men have served as Presbytery elders. Ian Shuttleworth  helped with the youth club and has been a member of the Fabric Committee for many years. Ian Kingan was a Sunday School leader and was church treasurer for 22 years.

Ian Kingan's son is following the family tradition by being elder and Treasurer to the congregation at New Abbey.
