Creating Communities of Belonging

Tuesday March 31

A conference is to be held in June exploring how to include people with learning disabilities in congregations.

‘Creating Communities of Belonging’, in Dundee on June 6, will discuss what is meant by ‘belonging’ and what aspects of church life need to change to develop such communities.

The event is being organised by the Learning Disabilities Working Group (LDWG), within the Mission and Discipleship Council (MDC) of the Church of Scotland.

Elspeth McCallum, Convenor of the group, said: “The LDWG has been engaged in a consultation process across Scotland to better understand how it might develop sustainable ways to support and enable congregations to be communities in which those with learning disabilities can meaningfully belong.

“A report summarising the findings can be found within the MDC Blue Book report to this year’s General Assembly. An initial significant response from the LDWG has been to host the Learning Disabilities conference (6 June).

“At this event, focused on the theme ‘Creating Communities of Belonging’, delegates will have an opportunity to: connect with others from congregations who have established relevant initiatives and approaches; consider what the Bible has to say; and be further resourced and inspired through engaging with organisations that have developed resources and support. The LDWG hope that many will be able to attend and benefit from this event.”

The conference takes place on Saturday June 6 at the University of Dundee, starting at 10.30am.
