Telling the Holy Week Story Through Art

Thursday April 2

A Bearsden Church is using the work of local artists to tell the story of Holy Week.

Forty local artists have been invited by the Association of Bearsden Churches to provide their own interpretation of biblical passages for the final week of Jesus' life.

The results have been placed in New Kilpatrick Parish Church and are being added to each day during the week.

The minister of New Kilpatrick, the Rev Roddy Hamilton, said: "We have installations and art pieces of a plethora of mediums: originally created and crafted jewellery, a silk piece that is being created by the people who visit, oils and pastels and embroidery, origami, to mention a few. Some are tactile like ribbons hanging from the balcony representing Mary's hair, a crown of thorns made of leather, the upper room full of objects the point us back into the story of Jesus.

"Our evening worship for the whole community takes place within and among these pieces of art to help engage people in a different way and let them hear the story again for the first time."

The church is open from 11am-4pm and 6.30-8.30pm, with a short reflection at midday and ecumenical worship at 7.30pm.
