'Slave Auction' at Heart and Soul

Monday April 27

A mock 'slave auction' will take place next month in Edinburgh to raise awareness of human trafficking.

The Scottish Churches Anti-human Trafficking Group is hoping to draw attention to the buying and selling of people, mostly for sexual exploitation, that takes place in Scotland and further afield.

The auction will take place at 3.40pm on Sunday May 17 at the Ross Bandstand in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens, part of the Church of Scotland's Heart and Soul event.

The Scottish Churches' Anti-Human Trafficking Group was established in June 2011 to enable the churches in Scotland to work together for the eradication of human trafficking. Membership includes the Church of Scotland, Church of Scotland Guild, Minority Ethnic Christians Together in Scotland, Religious Society of Friends, Roman Catholic Church, Salvation Army, Scottish Episcopal Church, Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office, CARE and the International Justice Mission. “I am shocked and appalled at this planned performance. I think it is so disrespectful to those who have suffered such treatment in real life. We do not need to see this in order to raise awareness of human trafficking. We see horrific pictures everyday on the news. Would you perform a mock rape and pillage? No, of course not. Then this should not happen either. I beg you to reconsider.”

“Having lived and worked in Europe for nearly 20 years I am in complete agreement with the comment from Gillian Cowie. The trauma that these people, especially women, have gone through is horrific. Just imagine if one of these victims were in Princes Street gardens during this event and saw the 'mock' auction. By all means highlight the issue but not in this way.”
