Troon and Tulliallan Triumph in BB Band Contest

Wednesday April 29

Nearly 300 young people from across Scotland competed in The Boys’ Brigade’s 36th Scottish Bands Contest on Saturday at The Brunton in Musselburgh.

The day’s big winners were 1st Troon Company Band, who took first place in the Pipe Band Championship Class as well as three other competitions, and 1st Tulliallan Company Band, who won the Wind Open Class Championship.

Jonathan Stevenson (14), bass drummer with 1st Troon, said: “I’ve been playing with the band for the three years. Playing in the Scottish Bands Contest means a great deal to me as it’s my third time playing in the championships and this is where I played my first ever competition.

“It’s fantastic that bands from across Scotland come together to compete and play to such a high standard.”

Ryan, 1st Tulliallan Company band, added: “I was really surprised that we won as the other bands were so good! It was such a nerve-racking experience. Hopefully we can retain the title next year too. “

Around 500 spectators attended the competition over the course of the day, with bands attending from Companies in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Fife, Stirling, Dundee and Ayrshire.

There were seven different categories available, offering participants of all ages and skill levels to showcase their talents.

The bands performed for VIP guests Kenny McAskill MSP (Former Cabinet Secretary for Justice), Councillor Ludovic Broun-Lindsay (Provost of East Lothian) and BB National Vice-president, Alistair Burrow, who presented the winners’ trophies.

Bill Stevenson, Director, Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said: “We all had a great day at the contest and heard some fantastic music and it’s been great to see the young people playing in the bands and the audience enjoying themselves.

“Music has always been important in the Boys’ Brigade and this has been a real celebration of that and I’m sure we’re already starting to look forward to next year’s contest.”
