Parish News Round-up

Thursday April 30

Our weekly round-up of news received from churches

Fundraising has taken on a new look at Broom Parish Church, in the Presbytery of Glasgow, with events planned to appeal to a wide range of congregation and the wider community.

A packed church heard the wonderful sound of the Glasgow Philharmonic Male Voice Choir with the world renowned soloist, Oksana Mavrodii included in the programme.

A considerable sum was raised for church funds.

St Andrew’s Wallace Green and Lowick, Berwick-Upon-Tweed has enjoyed a hugely successful Flower Festival, which was part of a Stewardship Season with a focus on the use of time as a gift from God.

Over the Easter weekend, more than 700 visitors were welcomed to the church. On show was a beautiful and colourful floral display, put together by more than 20 artists from Berwick and beyond, which depicted some key moments and people in the church’s history.

Visitors viewed an exhibition, illustrating the many current activities of the congregation. Also on show was a new congregational banner, created by forty people, young and old and featuring images of church and town. Along with this, there was also a banner made by pupils and staff at Tweedmouth Prior Park First School, which had a Celtic theme.

In addition, there was a church video, which included interviews with members recounting the past and looking forward to the future.

After viewing the displays, visitors were able to enjoy a cream tea. Please see www.sawg.org.uk for information, including a link to the church video.

March 3 1985 was an important date in the calendar of the Church of Scotland Carlisle as a total of eight elders were ordained by the minister of that time, the Rev John Masson, and joined Session.

Of the eight, five elders are still active and valued members of the Session. On March 15 2015 they were presented with their long service certificates signed by the Moderator, the Rt Rev John Chalmers. After presenting the certificates, the current minister of the Border Kirk, the Rev David Pitkeathly, reminded the congregation of the varied talents and commitment of each elder.

On behalf of the congregation, Rev Pitkeathly offered thanks and congratulations, therefore, to Catherine Anne Fisher (Kate), Douglas Graham Fisher (Graham), Laura Irving (Laura), Isabel Aileen Kaird McCutcheon (Aileen) and Marion Watt McNeill (Moira) on achieving 30 years as elders.
