Our regular round-up of news submitted by parishes

As part of Banff and Macduff annual COAST Festival during the weekend of May 22-24, Banff Parish Church presented various displays on the theme "Let the Light In".

The church was open to visitors throughout the weekend. On the Saturday afternoon visitors were invited to follow footprints on the carpet round the church and view displays by various church groups, or to sit and take time for peaceful reflection through music, art and craft, flowers, quiet and candlelight.

At intervals there were choir and organs recitals while a power-point presentation was shown on the theme of Light.

The weekend closed on Sunday afternoon with a Blessing of the Fleet service at Banff harbor, conducted by the Rev David Locke with music provided by church organist Stephen Pratt, which drew a gathering of more than 50 people.

During morning worship at Penicuik North Kirk, Midlothian, on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, the congregation were presented with their first Eco Congregation Award by the Rev Trevor Jamison, Eco-Congregation Scotland's Environmental Chaplain.  Mr Jamison also brought with him the Climate Justice Baton which was passed around the congregation during the service.

No, not a barbecue, but part of the Pentecost celebrations at St Margaret's Church, Forfar. Pictured are the Rev Maggie Hunt and Ian Wallace, a scout leader at St Margaret's, supervising the safety aspect of the proceedings.

Celebrate Together, a worship service organised in February by the ecumenical Fellowship of Kilmarnock Churches and hosted at New Laigh Kirk, attracted a large and joyful audience. Guest contributors included the Salvation Army Pioneer Timbrels, including people with learning disabilities, and East Kilbride’s Deaf Action Choir.

Publicity in the local press drew attention to the talents of these musicians and the intent of the Fellowship of Churches to overcome barriers which exclude people with disabilities from worship.

Long Service awards were presented to three Elders at South Holburn Church, Aberdeen, on Palm Sunday. Left to right: the Rev George Cowie, Elders Shelagh Johnstone, Jim Murray and Pam Pritchard, and Session Clerk Alan Johnston.

Janice Fotheringham, Jessie Dunnachie and John Campbell Young were ordained as Elders in Denny Westpark Church on May 10. They are pictured with the Rev Raymond Thomson, locum minister (left) and Elizabeth Harley, Session Clerk (on the right).

Fresh from their success on the stage of the Ross Bandstand, the Heart and Soul Swing Band can be seen in concert on Friday June 5 in Cambuslang Parish Church, Arnott Way, Cambuslang.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and entry is free, with donations to the Church of Scotland HIV Programme.
