Students Transform Church Entrance

Thursday June 4

The entrance to an Edinburgh church has been transformed by a team from two local schools.

Young people from Drummond Community High School and Leith Academy painted a colourful mural at the entrance to Broughton St Mary’s Parish Church.

The 22 students were working towards the Skillforce Prince’s Award. As part of the award they have to plan and implement a programme within 24 hours that will make a significant contribution to their community. The award is run by education charity SkillForce, in conjunction with The Duke of Cambridge.

Each student came up with ideas that were incorporated into the Edinburgh themed design.

SkillForce regional instructor Hannah Smith said: “It is important that young people feel they are a part of their community and are given the opportunity to make their own contribution.

“Through the SkillForce Prince’s Award the group have had a direct involvement in the Broughton community and made their mark on the Church, and by doing this they have developed skills that will help them in their own future.

“I am extremely proud of the achievements they have made throughout the year and for the hard work, time and effort they all put into this project. They worked beyond the hours expected of them, they were so well behaved and polite to the other members who were using the church while we were there.

“It is a wonderful building and is used by so many groups, a fantastic place to have in the community”

Hannah also thanked B&Q, who donated the paint for the mural, and Harvey Nichols who provided refreshments.

Skillforce is an educational charity which aims to help young people realise their individual potential and academic ability. Many of its instructors are former members of the armed forces.

The church is having a public inauguration of the mural today (Thursday) at 5.30pm.
