Former Moderator Honoured for Srebrenica Charity Work

                                                                                                                                                           Tuesday July 7, 2015

A FORMER Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has dedicated an award for her charity work in keeping the memory of Srebrenica massacre alive to a group of women seeking justice for the atrocity.

The Very Rev Dr Lorna Hood was awarded a Points of Light award for her work in ensuring lessons are learned from the massacre, which led to the deaths of 8000 Muslims in Bosnia in the 1990s. She has played a key role in organising the national commemoration of the atrocity in Edinburgh this week and chairs the Scotland Board of the charity Remembering Srebrenica. Dr Hood also lead a delegation from Scotland to Bosnia in February on behalf of the charity.

Dr Hood, minister at Renfrew North, served as Moderator in 2013/14 and visited the Balkans during her Moderatorial year and has worked tirelessly to ensure the lessons of the massacre are not forgotten.

She was presented with her award at a special ceremony in London yesterday (Monday) by the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

Presenting Dr Hood with the award, he said: “It is vital that we continue to learn the lessons of the horrific events in Srebrenica. As we approach the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre I am pleased to be able to recognise Dr Hood’s work to lead the commemoration in Scotland with this Points of Light award.”

Commenting on her Twitter account after the presentation, Dr Hood wrote: “Dedicating Points of Light award from PM to Mothers of Srebrenica who work tirelessly for justice @SrebrenicaUK about telling their story.”

The Points of Light awards, set up in 2014, recognises outstanding individual volunteers who are making a change in their community. Less than 300 have been awarded since their inception.
