'Save the Christians' Petition Launched

Tuesday July 21

A global petition has been launched calling on governments to provide support for Christians fleeing persecution in the Middle East.

The petition has been set up by the Barnabas Fund, the charity which supports persecuted Christians worldwide. Among the first signatories were Lord Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury, and Canon Andrew White, the former Vicar of Baghdad.

The Barnabas Fund notes that the Christian communities in Iraq and Syria are among the most ancient in the world, yet face a threat to their existence which it compares to the Armenian and Assyrian genocides of the early 20th century. The Christian population of Iraq has shrunk by over 80% since 2003; and around a quarter of Syria's two million Christians have fled their homes since the start of the conflict there.

The petition calls on governments to work for the provision of secure areas for displaced Christians in the Middle East, and to give Christian refugees priority as asylum seekers.

Earlier this month, the Barnabas Fund helped evacuate 157 Syrian Christians to Poland. It says that more evacuations will follow.
