The Highland town of Grantown on Spey celebrated its 250th birthday on June 28, and had a week of events to mark the occasion.

The final day kicked off with a special 'Churches Together' service in a marquee in the square, involving all the local churches. Well over 200 people joined in, with many more outside in the sun, and there was even a special visit from Rev Patrick Grant, minister of Cromdale in 1765, when Grantown was just "barren heath!"

The picture shows the Rev Gordon Strang, minister of Grantown on Spey, dressed in period costume, welcoming worshippers to the special service.

The Reverend Rae Clark, minister of Channelkirk and Lauder in the Scottish Borders, continues with a valued series of 'Away Days' for Elders who regularly look to themselves, their role as an Elder, and the wider parish. In order to guide thought further Elders agreed to pursue the cause through Future Focus, the Church of Scotland's spiritual process of engagement with the community, examining congregational life and stimulating theological reflection leading towards clear goals and a plan of action including a renewal of vows.

St Mark's Church of Scotland in Stirling gladly welcomed the ordination of five new Elders on Sunday August 30. From left: Lynne F Swanston, Irene L Asher, Lesley A Davidson, the Rev Stuart Davidson, Margaret H McKenzie, Jennifer C Stewart.

Margaret Mateos is the first woman elder to become Moderator of Dunfermline Presbytery.

Born and brought up in Cowdenbeath, Margaret attended the local church as a youngster and joined the Church of Scotland at 18, just before commencing her nursing training in West Lothian. After this Margaret went to India for a year as a nurse as part pf the Church’s Youth Share programme. She returned for a short while before deciding to train as a missionary partner for the Church of Scotland and from 1984 – 1987 served in Malawi. It was during this period that Margaret met her future husband Javin, a Mexican doctor working for the American Presbyterian Church.

On her return to Scotland Margaret trained as a Health Visitor and secured a position as a Health Visitor in Thurso before returning to Fife in 1998. Margaret is currently Team Manager based in the Rosewell Clinic, Lochore.

Margaret is an elder at Lochgelly and Benarty St Serfs Church in Lochgelly and is currently undertaking a three year period of training and distance learning study to become an Ordained Local Minister.
