'Pray for Prisoners' Call

Tuesday November 10

An Inverness prison chaplain has urged people to think of and pray for those who offend and are locked up.

The Rev Dr Peter Donald, part of the chaplaincy team at HMP Inverness, made the call ahead of Prisoner's Week, which is next week.

As part of the week, a service will be held at St Stephen's Church in Inverness, the nearest church to the prison.

Dr Donald said: “Who are we who offend and get locked up? Who are we who are offended against, and what is the way forward?

“With prayers being offered for all those within criminal justice and recognising that whatever else crime involves, it's not just about getting people behind bars, but on learning alongside one another how to live well. Prisoners' Week is something worth building on.”

The Prison Governor will speak at the service, as will a prison chaplain and a representative from Prison Fellowship.

Dr Donald, who is also minister at Crown Church, added: “We hope also to have some artwork and literature generated from within the prison - all as an opening way to engage our thoughts and a time of discussion.

"'Just us' is the great theme chosen this year for Prisoners' Week.

“For an hour, being alongside one another, 'just us'. Let it not be forever them and us.”

The service in St Stephen's Church, Southside Road, starts at 8pm on Monday November 16.
