Nearly 70 years’ involvement with the Girls’ Brigade was recognised on Sunday when Evelyn Porter was presented with the British Empire Medal.

The presentation was made by John Duncan QPM, the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, during morning worship at Saltcoats North Parish Church in North Ayrshire.

Evelyn recently retired after serving as Captain of the 4th Saltcoats Company of the Girls' Brigade for 51 years.  She has been involved for 68 years in total, having joined the new organisation, then called the Girls’ Guildry, in 1947. She became an officer at 18 and a Captain at 21, both the youngest possible age.  She was also President of the North Ayrshire Division for five years.

Evelyn said: "I am very honoured to be given this award for doing something that I really liked over the years, and I would like to thank all the people who have supported me".

Representatives from several Girls’ Brigade companies and the Provost of North Ayrshire, Joan Sturgeon (mother of the First Minister, Nicola), joined family and friends at the service.

The Minister of Saltcoats North, the Rev Alex Noble, said: "Evelyn is a legend in her time, a real character with character, a pied-piper leader and a Christian lady who has always tried her best to serve God and His girls in the Girls' Brigade."

On Sunday Dalbeattie and Kirkgunzeon Church in Dumfries and Galloway recognised elders, choir members and flower conveners for 30 to 70 years of service. The Rev Fiona Wilson presented certificates signed by the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison. The Presbytery Moderator, David Gibson, and family members of those being honoured attended the very happy relaxed occasion.

November 15 was Promise Sunday in Juniper Green Parish Church in Edinburgh. On that Sunday, there was an adult baptism, three people professed faith to become members of the Church and seven new Elders were ordained. After the service, the congregation was invited to bring a picnic lunch to the hall and nearly 100 people stayed to make the whole event a real church family affair. The attached photo shows the sevent new elders with the minister the Rev Jim Dewar and the Session Clerk, Ross Mackay, far left.

North Parish Church in Dunfermline celebrated its 175th anniversary with a week of events at the start of November.

During a Communion service on Sunday November 1, the Session Clerk Ken Logan was presented with a certificate and voucher acknowledging 40 years in the role.

After the service the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison paid a short visit to the church as part of his tour of Dunfermline Presbytery that week.

During the week, the church hosted an exhibition on its history. Among the visitors were classes from two local primary schools who were particularly interested in the displays on the mining and weaving families who made up the majority of the congregation in 1840.

A celebration dinner on the Saturday was followed by a special evening Songs of Praise service on Sunday November 8 which included Psalms, paraphrases and hymns spanning the last 175 years.
