Souper Sunday Passes £250,000

The Convener of the Church of Scotland HIV Programme has praised the Church's support of the Souper Sunday initiative, which has raised over a quarter of a million pounds in just four years.

The Rev Dr Robin Hill first piloted Souper Sunday in his own Presbytery of Lothian in 2009, in response to the then Moderator of the General Assembly, the Very Rev David Lunan's challenge to Presbyteries to support the HIV Programme. It was rolled out nationally in 2010.

Congregations around the country have enthusiastically embraced it, holding specially prepared services focussing on issues around HIV, followed by soup lunches which have not only raised funds for the HIV Programme, but have proved opportunities for congregational fellowship. Churches have also held creative alternatives, serving coffee and croissants, or bacon rolls at early services, or ice-cream on 'Sundae Sundays'.

Dr Hill said: “We have been delighted with the level of support we have received from churches around Scotland. There is still a great need for the projects which the HIV Programme is able to facilitate with the money raised by Souper Sunday, so we look forward to more and more churches taking this on board using the resources available."
