Joseph Fiennes as Clavius in Risen

Today sees the UK cinema release of ‘Risen’, a major new film focusing on the events immediately following the crucifixion of Christ.

The film attempts to take a fresh look at the events of Easter by looking at it through the eyes of a non-believer. Joseph Fiennes plays Clavius, a powerful Roman military officer who is tasked with finding Jesus’ body in order to disprove the rumours of a risen Messiah – but instead finds his own beliefs challenged.

Fiennes, who won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love, says: “When I read the script, I marvelled at the fact that I’d just digested a biblical story that came across as an extraordinary murder mystery.

“When we first meet Clavius at the beginning of the film, he’s this rigorous, ambitious military man who’s spent 25 years serving the Roman army, so he’s really entrenched in one form of thinking. Then, through this series of adventures, Clavius arrives at a crossroad where he realises there might be a life beyond everything he knew before, something outside of his previous conditioning.”

Tom Felton – best known as Harry Potter’s nemesis Draco Malfoy - plays Clavius’ aide, Lucius, and Spooks star Peter Firth plays Pontius Pilate. The film is co-written and directed by Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves).
