Royal Visit to New L'Arche House

Tuesday June 4 2013

The Princess Royal last week visited the building site in Restalrig where L’Arche Edinburgh’s new house is nearing completion, and placed a commemorative stone plaque at the front entrance.

Princess Anne is Royal Patron of the Appeal to raise £1m to complete the new house, which is purpose-designed for people with learning disabilities who are ageing.

The unique two-storey house has been specifically created to mitigate the physical features that make it difficult for people with learning difficulties to continue to live at home as they age.

John Redwood, Director of L’Arche Edinburgh, said: “We are delighted that the Princess Royal has taken the time to see our new house being built.  It is an innovative project that ensures a better quality of life for people with learning disabilities as they grow older, with round-the clock-care in a small-scale, homely setting.”

The house will be home to four support assistants, who will live in the house alongside four people with disabilities.  It includes full wheelchair access throughout along with a lift, state of the art under-floor heating and sound-proofing and a large garden that is being specially landscaped to enhance the quality of life of the residents.

It is hoped the first residents will move in early next year.
