Go For It Fund Distributes Half a Million Pounds

Friday June 7 2013

The Church of Scotland’s ‘Go For It’ fund has given out another half a million pounds in grants.

The latest round of awards sees £492,000 heading to 20 church and community based projects across Scotland.

Among the successful applicants were Flemington Hallside Church Youth Project in Glasgow. They received three years' funding which will enable them to develop high quality youth work with young people, helping them to grow as individuals, develop their relationships with their peers and explore the challenges of faith.

The Rev Neil Glover, minister and Steering Group member said: "Without Go For It we would not have been able to appoint our new Youth And Community worker who has already made a tremendous difference in engaging our young people. The award has also enabled us to access other funds which are also enabling us to work with young people in our community.”

Bennochy Parish Church in Kirkcaldy have received a Research Grant for their Open Doors project, to explore ways in which they could reach isolated people in their community. The Research Grant is a small grant designed to help projects develop and grow their ideas.

St Giles and St Columba’s South Church, Elgin Youth Development Group (EYDG) intend to use their award to develop a community hub. This will offer an affordable community meeting space for vulnerable young parents, people with disabilities, carers and others that they want to reach out to in the area.

Fiona Birse, Chair of EYDG said: “We are delighted that the Go For It Fund has awarded us £10,000 for the next three years for our new community project. We are very much looking forward to starting the project later this year.”

Shirley Grieve, Go For It Fund Co-ordinator said: “Our programme of Small Grants and Main Grants are available to fund the widest range of church and community projects. You can apply anytime for a Small Grant; these are awarded on a rolling programme and applicants receive a decision within 4-6 weeks.  These are available up to a limit of £5,000.

"Main Grants are awarded twice a year through our Grants Committee meetings. It’s a two stage process with an initial proposal followed by a full application. The deadline for submission to the next Grants Committee is September 27.”

Shirley added: “Projects making a successful application to the fund will be local, closely connected to a Church of Scotland, committed to good partnership working and fit with at least two of the fund’s criteria.”
