Celebrations to mark the 1450th anniversary of the arrival of the Irish monk, Columba, in Scotland, have taken place across the country.
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood took part in an ecumenical service yesterday (Sunday) on Iona, as part of the celebrations. Columba landed on Iona and established a monastic ministry that reached across large parts of Scotland and the north of England.
Mrs Hood said: “I was delighted to be involved in the celebrations which were deeply humbling and moving for me. Without the work of Columba who knows where our faith and belief would be today.
“Iona is still so relevant to us all and especially the Iona community who continue to live out the Christian message of hope. Without hope we have nothing and it is a central tenet of our faith.”
Churches across Scotland joined in the celebrations over the weekend - particularly those named in honour of Columba. The anniversary was marked at this year's General Assembly in Edinburgh and played a key part in the theme of Heart and Soul, the Assembly Sunday celebration of the life of the Church of Scotland.
Representatives of ten Dumbarton churches gathered on Dumbarton Rock on Saturday for a multi-faith service to celebrate the anniversary.
It was the third multi-faith service to be held on the Rock in the past year.
