Speaking during a visit to the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, Mrs Hood suggested that in the present tough financial climate we should still do all we can to support the vital role which the farming community plays in supporting Scotland’s economy.
She said: “The Royal Highland Show displays the tremendous quality and variety of food we have on our doorstep. It is truly a gift from God.
“Like most people I use supermarkets but when I can, I do try to buy local food which helps keep a local person in a job. Even if it is a simple swap to local milk or eggs, it can and does make a difference.
“Supermarkets have done much to widen the range of food available to consumers and have brought in a range of methods to ensure quality control. They also provide jobs but we as consumers could shop more sensibly and make some changes to our relationship with food.
“This past spring has been difficult for Scottish farmers. I would love it if we could all do our bit to support them as much as we can. Food is a gift from God that we should value.”
