Personal reflection from the Moderator on Royal Highland Show visit

Thursday June 20 2013

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood has backed the work of the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

The charity, founded to support those who have worked on the land in financial need, the Moderator visited its stand during a visit to the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh.

Reflecting on the day, she said: "The Royal Highland Show is a 'must event' for those connected to the land, but it is also an enriching and educational experience for those of us who live in cities and towns.

"Church leaders and representatives gathered at the Scottish Churches Rural Group Pavilion, and  participated in an engaging discussion and talk about the problems farmers and those associated with the land have experienced due to the bad weather over the last fifteen months, resulting in so many cases of anxiety and financial hardship.

"Wandering through the many exhibits was a delight in the lovely sunny weather but it made my day when I was invited to climb up on the tractor for a photo opportunity. They must have heard about my driving as the ignition key was nowhere to be found!

"The tractor was part of  an RSABI  fundraising event. This is a charity, founded in 1897 and dedicated to helping people who have depended on the land, providing practical and financial support. There was a heartfelt plea from the Chairman, urging anyone in need or worried about the future to please make contact with them.

"This was a great and informative day with special thanks to the Scottish Churches Rural Group."
