Principal Clerk Becomes Queen's Chaplain

Tuesday July 9 2013

John ChalmersThe Principal Clerk to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has been appointed as a new Chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen in Scotland.

The Rev John Chalmers (left) said he was 'honoured and delighted' by the appointment.

In Scotland the Queen has 10 appointed chaplains and two domestic chaplains - the ministers of Crathie and the Canongate in Edinburgh. The appointment is until their 70th birthday. They wear distinctive red cassocks and purple clerical shirts or stocks.

Mr Chalmers served as a parish minister in Dumbartonshire and Edinburgh between 1979 and 1995. After that he worked in the Church's Board of Ministry (and its successor, the Ministries Council) until becoming Principal Clerk in 2010.
