Moderator welcomes appointment of new Archbishop

                                                                                                                                               Wednesday July 24 2013

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood, has welcomed the appointment of Monsignor Leo Cushley as Archbishop-elect of St Andrews and Edinburgh to the Catholic Church in Scotland.

She said: “I offer Monsignor Cushley my warmest congratulations and wish him every blessing in his new appointment.

“I look forward to meeting with him in the near future, and to a strong working relationship between our two churches.”

The appointment of the new Catholic archbishop was confirmed today by the Vatican.

He succeeds Cardinal Keith O'Brien who stepped down in February in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct.

The new archbishop was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, and was ordained almost 30 years ago.

The Archbishop-elect's episcopal ordination will take place in St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh on September 21 2013.
