Moderator victim of beach theft in Spain

                                                                         Friday August 2, 2013

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has been the victim of sneak thieves during a short holiday in Spain.

The Rt Rev Lorna Hood (pictured) and her husband, Peter, were enjoying a short break in Barcelona when the theft took place on the city's beach.

Reporting the theft today on Twitter she tweeted: "Momentary lapse on Barcelona beach and bag gone with Kindles, clothes and Euros. Police station three to four hours wait."

Mrs Hood is not the only Moderator to have fallen victim to thieves: a bag containing the Moderator's ring was stolen from her predecessor, the Very Rev Albert Bogle (read more here) and the ring was also targetted by thieves who raided the home of the Very Rev John Christie, who was Moderator in 2010.

Displaying her customary good humour, Mrs Hood also joked about an earlier episode when she had taken a copy of the Moderator's ring (which is still missing) to be resized and was consequently mistaken for the thief by vigilant staff at an Edinburgh jeweller.

“Sorry to hear that, Lorna. You deserved a relaxing break.”
